Problem with Saving Notepad Files (ANSI – Unicode encoding)

Worried…? 🙁
If your notepad file contain any unknown characters or icons or any other languages, you might face an error message while saving like below:

“D:\test.txt
This file contains characters in Unicode format which will be lost if you save this file as ANSI encoded text file. To keep the Unicode information, click Cancel below and then select one of the Unicode option from the Encoding drop down list. Continue?”

Now you cannot save your file with such characters or languages. Because default file encoding is ANSI. If you save with this ANSI encoding by clicking ‘OK’ button, you will lose such characters. If you change file encoding to Unicode, you can save your file without losing any data.

Now let’s see how to save your file without any change by Unicode encoding.

  • File -> Save As. (From your notepad file)
  • Change encoding from ‘ANSI’ to ‘Unicode’.
  •  Then save.
